Did You Ever Start Something and Not Finish? Here’s Where Most People Slip (including me)

 It’s Your Decision

I’ve got a shelf of things I’ve finished and a warehouse of things I’ve started. From weight training goals to business ventures, some people reach those lofty ideals and others make excuses so they can deal with the regret and pain of not having the grit to see it through. It’s easy to start something. It’s much harder to finish. Everyone has ideas and the ability to take a few steps toward a goal. But after a while, just like all your other great endeavors, your mind tries to re-frame your goal into something unattainable. You begin to look at the entirety of the dream as overwhelming instead of just focusing on your next task. This way of thinking makes for a very hard road.

Don’t let yourself be intimidated by the size of the goal. Just focus on the next step and how great the end will be.

The Lonely Road

We go through phases where things get really exciting. We have a great idea. We take action. Then the honeymoon phase ends and you are left alone with your commitment. It does feel lonely doesn’t it? It’s like you are walking down a road with family and friends on a big hiking trip and then all of the sudden it gets quiet and you look around….Just you and your big idea. When you start, you have visible support. Your friends encourage you. Your family is proud of you. And then, the spotlight moves on. The support that is still there no longer seems as tangible. Life is upon you again. You have responsibilities. It’s a long way to the finish line.

Value

If you can recognize this place when you get there and label it, it’s like having a super power. This is the magic place. This is the place where you pull away from those that don’t really want to pay the price. The brick walls are there to keep everyone else out, not you. This is where many, and perhaps even you, have failed before. This is the very reason that your dream has value! Without this very phenomenon everyone would do it. Anyone can start. It is walking this lonely road carrying our commitment while no one else watches that defines us. What you do here is all that matters. THIS IS WHERE GREATNESS IS BORN!

Are you that bold person you said you were?

Are you willing to do anything for it like you said you would?

Will you find a way?

You get to decide.

I hope you’ve had a great week working on your hustle. It’s my second week of training for this 50 kilometer trail race in February (plan to finish) and I decided to do something a little outside my comfort zone. I decided to start a local trail runners meetup group this week and found out that there’s a ton of interest in the idea. My group grew to 14 members in just a few days so I’m excited to meet some new faces and work on my running goals with some friends. I’ll keep you posted.

It’s been two months since I posted about how important it is to embrace some big changes. I can’t believe how much has changed in our lives since then. If you missed that post you can read it here. After 8 years, it’s time for a big change… Are you guilty of the same thing?

Next week I’m going to expose myself and share some really personal things. It’s a post on authenticity and how we can use it to really connect with others. If you enjoy the theme here then enter your email in the subscribers block and I won’t let you miss it.

And as always, thanks for being here . I appreciate your support. We’re on a roll!
